The diversity of East Denver makes the region difficult to characterize without describing some of the individual neighborhoods separately. East Colfax’s urban flair, for example, cannot be adequately compared to golf club living at Green Valley Ranch.
Green Valley Ranch is the farthest east of the East Denver neighborhoods. The proximity of several major roadways, however, makes for a reasonable commute of about 25 minutes to the city center. The community is located just outside of a protected wildlife area and wetlands at the base of the Rockies. As such, both the home properties and Green Valley’s golf course have stunning views of the natural landscapes. The golf course and related facilities are the major attractions of Green Valley.
Quite different from Green Valley Ranch are the more established neighborhoods of Washington Virginia Vale, Hilltop and Park Hill. Washington Virginia Vale and Hilltop are located in the southwest corner of East Denver. Washington Virginia Vale, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the area, is home to the Four Mile House on South Forest Street. Built in 1858, the Four Mile House is Denver’s oldest building that still stands. Hilltop’s oldest building was constructed in 1891 and is also an existing local landmark. Other local sites to see are Hilltop’s Cranmer Park and the Denver Tennis Club.
Park Hill is situated between Stapleton and Colorado Boulevard. The quiet, but impressive streets display ranches, two-stories and historic cottages and mansions. Park Hill’s neighborhood association is very active, organizing activities such as annual historic home walking tours.
East Denver’s modern communities such as Lowry Field and Stapleton demonstrate a new vision for the suburban lifestyle. Both include several types of residences to appeal universally to single, families, seniors and professionals. Residential areas are planned with small retail centers, open spaces and recreational facilities to create communities that are convenient for living, working and playing.
